On Belle Chaume

The essence of place, is as much to do with incident, atmosphere and very local conditions, as it is with the broad sweep of geography and landscape.

Belle Chaume is the local name of a chalk hilltop overlooking Sancerre and the river Loire. Covered in dry meadowland or pelouses sèches, it is home to three species of orchid. The word chaume, in French, means stubble or thatch.

A very special and fragile site with a superb view of Sancerre, we often sit there in the evening, while the sun sets behind us, surrounded by insects, grasses and wild flowers.
