At sea

Travelling by ferry is not at all like travelling by road or plane, even if you are in another sort of time capsule. The leisurely pace and the space offered by a boat make it quite different, as do the smells, the salt air and the gulls trailing you way out to sea.

The sun seems to shine much more at sea too, with clouds forming as air rises above the land, waiting to welcome you back to normality when you arrive.

And then there is all the sprawl and activity of docks and containers, cranes and jetties – the excitement of leaving at night and arriving with the dawn, while the rest of the world sleeps.
